At One Step at a Time DC, we believe that generosity should have the greatest impact possible. That’s why we strive to keep our administrative costs low—around 10%—so that approximately 90% of all donations can go directly to providing shoes, socks, and support to individuals and families in need. Every dollar matters, and we are intentional about making sure your contributions reach the people who need them most, not layers of overhead.

One of the ways we’re able to do this is by operating as a 100% volunteer-run organization. From our directors and board members to every person who helps distribute shoes, pack boxes, organize events, and manage the day-to-day details—no one receives a paycheck. Our leadership team is made up of individuals who give their time, energy, and expertise purely out of a shared commitment to serving our community. There are no salaries, stipends, or bonuses—just a group of people working together to make a tangible difference.

We take stewardship seriously. We know that when someone gives, whether it’s $5, $500, or a brand-new pair of shoes, they’re trusting us to use that gift wisely and effectively. That trust is something we never take lightly. By maintaining low overhead, we can ensure that the majority of every contribution goes directly toward meeting real needs—putting new shoes on children’s feet, supporting families facing hard times, and uplifting people who are working to rebuild their lives.
